About us:

TCHPS is committed to promoting historic preservation and encouraging restoration of individual properties as well as historic districts in Dawson and Terrell County. TCHPS can offer advice on restoration and preservation techniques to those interested. We believe preservation and restoration are a form of civic pride.

The past several years we have made an effort to work closely with the city of Dawson to increase cultural awareness, improve the appearance of streets and buildings, and preserve places of historical importance.

Two sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the Terrell County Courthouse and the Garden Club House. The present courthouse is the second one to be built in the county; it was constructed in 1892 and renovated in 1936.

Renovations have been completed on the courthouse, the Carnegie Library, and the Garden Club House. The old McDowell Building has been remodeled and is now the headquarters for the Terrell County Chamber of Commerce.

We have activities throughout the year which include: Tour of Homes, Fall Festival, and a Progressive Dinner.

The Tour of Homes is an annual event which allows the public to view the inside of Dawson’s antebellum and Victorian houses. Our Fall Festival is an event which includes local vendors and entertainment. And the Progressive Dinner is a social event where hosts serve different courses at their homes throughout the evening.

We believe it is a matter of civic pride to promote preservation and restoration.
