The High Victorian in Gothic style
courthouse was constructed in 1892, at the cost of $36,832. William A.
Parkins served as the architect and designer. Materials from within the
state were used when possible; Georgia clay for the bricks, Georgia
granite for the arches and Georgia pine for the structure and floors.
The prominent feature of
this courthouse is its clock tower and wind vane. The tower is visible
for miles around. The wind vane provides a steady indication of the
prevailing wind from its vantage point. The E. Howard clock has two
bells to toll the hour and half-hour; a restoration project is underway.
